We care about Australia's renewable energy future

If you’re reading this it’s because you’re interested in renewable energy. Well, so are we.

Powershop Australia is proudly backed by 100% renewable energy generation. Our parent company, Meridian Energy Australia, manages and operates multiple hydropower plants and wind turbine farms in New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia.

It doesn’t end there. All of our customers' energy use is 100% carbon offset - at no extra cost to them.

Why is this important? Because of the nature of how electricity is provided to homes and businesses across Australia, no one can guarantee where the electricity at your power point has come from. So we double down by making sure that any potential carbon produced in the making of our customers’ energy is offset by the planting of trees and other green initiatives around the world, all accredited by the UN and at zero additional cost to our customers.

Meet Meridian's renewable energy asset family!

They even have one in the oven

At Meridian Energy Australia, Hydroelectricity and wind power is where it’s at! We’re super proud to call these hydro dams and wind turbines our brothers and sisters in arms.

Mt Millar Wind Farm

The Mt Millar Wind Farm was the first wind farm in South Australia to use direct drive turbines that don’t have gear boxes.

Mt Mercer Wind Farm

The power that’s generated at Mt Mercer is enough to result in a reduction of some 510,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Hepburn Wind Farm

Hepburn Wind is the owner and operator of Australia’s first community-owned wind farm. We partner with Hepburn Wind to manage Gale and Gusto and provide top class expertise to help maintain the community owned wind farm.

Salt Creek Wind Farm

A 2012 study found that for every 50 MW in capacity, a wind farm delivers $250,000 per year for farmers in land rental income and $80,000 on community projects each year.

Crudine Ridge Wind Farm

The estimated annual greenhouse gas savings from the Crudine Ridge project is 325,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent.

Hume Hydro

Hydro power accounted for 33.9 per cent of the renewable electricity produced in Australia in 2017.

Burrinjuck Hydro

The dam is about 60 kilometres south-west of Yass. Unfortunately, the cast of Queer Eye did not visit when they were filming in Yass. We did offer though.

Blue Rock Hydro

Signing the Blue Rock PPA, and other PPAs in 2018 helped us to drop prices for our customers across Australia.

100% Carbon neutral

Our customer’s energy usage is 100% carbon neutral

To simplify things, your electricity is transported to your home or business in the following way:

  1. Electricity is generated by power plants big, small, dirty, or green
  2. This electricity is then sent into the wholesale electrical grid, or simply, “the Grid”
  3. From the Grid, electricity then gets sent to homes and businesses through distribution lines

In pretty picture summary:

We’re all over point 1 - our parent company, Meridian Energy Australia, only manages and operates renewable energy generating assets. Tick!

Point 2 we have no control over, which means we have no control what type of electricity you would get as per point 3.

In comes the Carbon Neutral Network accreditation (previously known as NCOS) by the Australian Government. In short this accredits any business that they are carbon neutral from an operations point of view - including the product or service they’re selling, which in our case is electricity and gas! Fun fact - we were the first retail energy provider in Australia to get that tick of approval! Way back in 2014!

But wait - how can the Australian Government say the electricity and gas we provide to our customers is carbon neutral if we can’t say it’s clean renewable energy because it comes from the Grid? That’s where carbon certificates, or Certified Emission Reduction certificates (CER), come in.

What are Certified Emission Reduction (CER) certificates?

Anywhere in the world there are sustainability projects being undertaken that help take carbon dioxide (greenhouse gases) out of the atmosphere. These projects are developed under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Clean Development Mechanism, and through this framework CERs are generated and sold to businesses on an open market who are looking to offset their own carbon emissions.

It’s through this mechanism that any business can become carbon neutral by funding these sustainability projects through the purchase of these CERs which we have done on the behalf of our customers, making their energy use 100% carbon neutral.

Monthly Specials are only available a few times a month, so you have to be quick to get them. They’re a bigger discount than the Power Saver on usually about a day’s worth of usage. Follow us on social media so you don’t miss out on these extra special savings.

Monthly Specials

We like to throw in a saving surprise a couple of times a month for our customers. Only available for a limited time and for a limited amount of energy.

How to use

Take a look at how much you spend per day on energy via the app or your online account. Then calculate how many days of energy you’d like the Powerpack to cover. For example, if you’re wanting to cover a week’s worth of power and you’re using about $4 per day, you’ll want to buy $28 worth of the Powerpack (plus the relevant GreenPower premium). This Powerpack also gives you the flexibility to buy as much or as little as you want.

Green Power Saver

The GreenPower Saver is – as its name suggests – a little bit greener than the regular Power Saver. It will still save you off your Auto Pay rates, and includes an 5.5c premium for every kWh of power it covers.

How to use

Take a look at how much you spend per day on energy via the app or your online account. Then calculate how many days of energy you’d like the Powerpack to cover. For example, if you’re wanting to cover a week’s worth of power and you’re using about $4 per day, you’ll want to buy $28 worth of the Powerpack (plus the relevant premium). This Powerpack also gives you the flexibility to buy as much or as little as you want.

Your Community Energy

Want to save and contribute to community renewable energy projects? Then this Powerpack is for you! Not only will you save off your Auto Pay rate you'll also contribute a 6.6c/kWh premium which is used to fund community renewable energy projects around the country (and soon, the world).

How to use

Take a look at how much we’re estimating this pack will cost you via our app or online account. If we’re estimating that you’ll be using about $4 per day next month and the Future Pack is worth five days of energy, it’ll cost you about $20. You can get a max of two packs each month.

Future Packs

Hop into a savings time machine by grabbing a Future Pack (or two). Future Packs make it super easy to save on a few days' worth of power to cover your usage for the next month or the month after.

How to use

Take a look at how much we’re estimating this pack will cost you via our app or online account. If we’re estimating that you’ll be using about $4 per day for the month this Super Future Pack covers, and the pack is worth seven days of energy, it’ll cost you about $28.

Super Future Packs

You can't predict the future, but at least you can save big off our Auto Pay rates. Just charge up with a Super Future Pack and get the biggest discount possible! Plus the further in the past you buy them, the more future savings you score!

How to use

If you don’t top up your account in full at the end of your billing period with one of the discounted Powerpacks, we use the Auto Pay pack to automatically cover any shortfall. So if you’re using about $4 per day and you’re behind by two days at bill time, it will cost you about $8. Want to save more? The Mega, Saver and Future Powerpacks will put more dollars back in your pocket.

Auto Pay

This Powerpack gives you our great default rate which we charge automatically at the end of your billing period if you haven’t bought any of the discounted Powerpacks available to you.

We don’t just love renewable energy

We love our neighbourhood too

We’re community-minded too. Why do we want to be Australia’s greenest energy retailer? Put simply - we care about the environment. Cleaner energy means a happier climate, but with the help of our customers, we also fund sustainability projects around Australia.

And in times of crisis, our customers band together to help those that are in need - as we did during the recent bushfire crisis and with Covid19.

Check out some of our programs here:

Reef restoration

Our ‘Your Community Energy’ Powerpack allows customers to pay for power and support environmental initiatives at the same time. Your Community Energy is currently supporting the Reef Restoration Foundation to help restore coral on the Great Barrier Reef.

Curb your power

We're passionate about a cleaner and more resilient energy future. That's why we run a demand response program called Curb Your Power for Victorian Powershop customers to reduce the demand on the grid during peak times and earn rewards!

Power it forward

We launched the Power It Forward Powerpack in early 2020 that allowed our customers to support Powershoppers affected by the bushfires by purchasing power.

Free power days

In 2019 we ran our first ever ‘Free Power Day’, giving our customers a day of free power to celebrate when the wind was blowing at our wind farms.
