After successfully becoming certified as carbon neutral against the requirements of the National Carbon Offset Standard (NCOS) by the Australian Government for electricity in 2016, our certification now includes our gas offering as well.

This accreditation means our carbon neutrality for both electricity and gas has been officially recognised by the Australian Government – the first time an energy company has been accredited under this program.

Meridian Energy Australia (our parent company), Powershop (us), and all our operations are certified carbon offset under the NCOS benchmark. But importantly for our customers, the NCOS accreditation applies to the energy we sell as well. So if you’re a Powershop customer, all your electricity and gas usage is certified 100% carbon neutral – at no extra cost to you!

It’s a bit of a mouthful, but we’re delighted about the certification so we thought we’d take a moment to break down the acronym and explain what being carbon neutral for gas means.

The NCOS accreditation provides a benchmark for businesses and other organisations that are voluntarily seeking to be carbon neutral. The benchmark sets out what is required for calculating, auditing and offsetting the carbon account of an organisation, product or service to achieve carbon neutrality. It also provides guidance around what is a genuine offset unit.

Making our gas carbon neutral works similarly to electricity – because we source our gas from the Australian gas market, we know the gas our customers use has a carbon cost. For every gigajoule of gas we provide to customers, we calculate the carbon emissions that would be released from consuming that volume of gas. Powershop then purchases and surrenders carbon certificates to offset that usage – these are then accredited under the National Carbon Offset Standard.

*We commit to using Certified Emission Reduction certificates. These certify that emissions have been reduced by a Clean Development Mechanism project project verified under the Kyoto Protocol.

Offsetting all the carbon associated with our customers’ energy usage at no extra cost means we’re supporting local and global environmental, social and economic initiatives. It’s part of our commitment to do the right thing by the planet to help encourage positive outcomes for Australians and communities all over the world.

    How much does it cost?

    • Powershop, August 7, 2018:

Hey Nick, we don’t charge customers to make the energy consumption 100% carbon neutral. We just do it because it’s the right thing to do. Hope that answers your question. Cheers!

I’m a Powershop electricity customer who’s been waiting a long time for you to deliver gas.
I have a gas stove and a gas hot water heater and would like to know whether the savings with Powershop are worth keeping them, or whether I should switch to Powershop solar and go all electric. Please tell me what I need to know to make the right choice.
