Get the low down on the Victorian Default Offer

Electricity 2 min read June 24, 2019

There’s a lot of confusion in the energy market and at Powershop we do everything we can to make your experience better, with greater transparency and fairer pricing.

This information is for Victorian customers wanting to know more about the Victorian Default Offer.

This offer only applies for Victoria. If you’re in NSW, QLD or South Australia click here to learn more about the Default Market Offer being introduced from 1 July 2019.

From 1 July 2019, the Victorian Government will make the Victorian Default Offer available through all Victorian electricity retailers. The Offer has been set by the Essential Services Commission (ESC) to help protect consumers who are unwilling or unable to engage in the market. But what does this mean for Powershoppers?

We’ve set up FAQs to answer some of the questions surrounding the Victorian Default Offer and what this means for our customers. But the short answer is, not much! If you still have questions don’t hesitate to give our awesome customer team a bell and they’ll be more than happy to help.

What is the Victorian Default Offer?

The Victorian Default Offer is a set of rates replacing all Single Rate Standing Offers which are higher than the Victorian Default Offer in Victoria. The Victorian Default offer was set by the Victorian Government (and will be set by the ESC going forward) in response to some shady behaviours by some retailers.

It will require all retailers with customers on Single Rate Standing offers higher than the Victorian Default Offer to move them to the new Victorian Default Offer rates, as these have been set at a cost that the government has deemed fair.

At Powershop we’re happy to say that we have no active customers that need to be moved onto the Victorian Default Offer because we have always made sure that our customers are treated fairly.

What changes for Powershop customers?

Not much. We have no active customers moving to the Victorian Default Offer. However any of our Victorian customers have the opportunity to switch over to the Victorian Default Offer upon request.

How does the Victorian Default Offer compare?

Our Market Offers in most cases continue to be better value than the Victorian Default Offer. Feel free to give us a bell from 1 July 2019 to check which offer you’re on and how it compares.

What if I want to go on the Victorian Default Offer?

No worries, just give us a call on 1800 462 668 and we can chat this through with you.

Will I be automatically put on the Victorian Default Offer?

We have no active customers automatically going on the Victorian Default Offer. Customers can be placed on the Victorian Default Offer on request from 1 July 2019, but because our Market Offers are better value in most cases, you’re better off staying on one of them.

How do I know what offer suits me best?

At Powershop we have a couple of great options to suit different needs and experiences. For customers who want to be more hands on with their power, utilising our shop gives customers access to extra discounts and savings. PowershopLITE suits customers who just want to set and forget with payments automatically debited from your chosen payment method each month.

With the introduction of the Victorian Default Offer the two great options above are still going to be available. If you choose to swap to the Victorian Default Offer it’s important to note that we have no control on the future of these rates as the ESC will determine the ongoing price of the Victorian Default Offer.
